THE BEST JUST GOT BETTER!
The response to the UP24 was incredible! Customers from professional land surveyors, meteorologists, scientists, pilots and hikers to the curious hobbyist were overwhelmed with its sensitivity and accuracy. Reading realtime elevation to a third of an inch blew their minds! Even with this response we considered it a challenge to make it even better... and we sure did! Introducing the next generation UP24B!
First, for extended field use, we designed an internal lithium ion power cell and a state of the art power management system. Now you can charge the internal power cell from either an external source of 6VDC to 30VDC or a standard 5VDC USB connection from a PC, laptop, or USB charger! The power management system determines the best charging source to use as well as operates the UP24B while keeping the lithium Ion cell at full charge. Charging status and battery condition displays are also provided.
Next we added a "MARK" feature. This allows storing a single data point reading when YOU want instead of blindly storing readings at the selected sample rate. A connection jack is provided for a simple contact closure to make a reading. This closure can be a "dry" set of contacts or electronic closure. Data storage is in comma delimited format for easy loading into a spreadsheet. Each time you enter the "MARK MODE" a new data block is started allowing you to easily identify multiple sets of data. Current data is constantly displayed for your convenience in mark mode.
Finally, we streamlined the controls to make a more compact profile. The rotary menu navigation dial has been replaced by contactless proximity buttons for more reliable operation! Just touch your way through the menus without any dials or switches!
THE ULTIMATE PRODUCT FOR THE SERIOUS, THE CURIOUS, AND THE PROFESSIONAL!
We did it again! The UP24 was one of our most advanced kits to date. Rather than resting on our laurels we made it even better and the new UP24B is an absolute MUST for anyone serious about the environment around us! But the applications only begin there. The unique design allows unprecedented super high resolution measurements and display of absolute atmospheric air pressure and elevation. Hobbyists and weather enthusiasts absolutely love it! Land surveyors, scientists, and pilots have made it a "must have"!
ELEVATION TO A THIRD OF AN INCH!
I have written a lot of catalog pages and a boatload of specification sheets but this one is a challenge because the applications are endless and the performance characteristics are beyond description! The UP24B senses ambient air pressure and critically calculates elevation with unheard of precision!
Using a highly sensitive sensor and 24-bit A/D converter in a special noise-immune design, less than 1/3" of an inch of elevation resolution is achieved! YES, we said 1/3 of an inch! This high accuracy and resolution opens the door to a host of sophisticated environmental air pressure monitoring applications.
AIR PRESSURE IN ANY FORMAT!
Unlike your normal run-of-the-mill barometer, air pressure is sensed in Pa's or kPa's. What are those you may ask? Pascals or KiloPascals. However, don't be afraid, for your convenience, and to fit any application you may have, it is also displayed in millibars, bars, PSI, atmospheres, millimeters of mercury, inches of mercury, and feet of water! Take your pick! The range of the UP24B is 15kPa to 155kPa. That also means:
15000 to 155000 Pascal's
150 to 1550 Millibars0.15 to 1.55 Bars
2.175566 to 22.48085 Pounds per square inch
0.1480385 to 1.529731 Atmospheres
112.5093 to 1162.596 Millimeters of mercury
4.429498 to 45.77148 Inches of mercury
5.02 to 51.9 feet of water
THE HI-RES REALTIME ATMOSPHERE SENSOR!
Gradual pressure changes, like a barometer, can show you gradual changes in the weather. Instantaneous changes in air pressure can show you a whole lot more! Weather-wise, high resolution pressure changes can be used to anticipate and even estimate related wind gusts and speeds. This together with "on the fly" pressure changes will give you the upper hand in weather monitoring. Part of ARPS (Advanced Regional Prediction System) is to obtain and analyze realtime data to provide a prediction system for weather components. The UP24B is ideal as a source for highly accurate realtime data.
THEN THE ENGINEER SAID "WATCH THIS"!
But what if the air pressure changes that need to be sensed and recorded are ever so slight? You have the perfect ultra reliable sensor and heart of an alarm system for a building. When I first heard this I questioned it. Then the engineering staff said "watch this..." A hundred feet from the main entrance of Ramsey they called the front receptionist and asked her to open the front door to the building. WOW! An immediate change in air pressure registered on the UP24B! From an open door, to a broken window, to wind damage, it's all detected and recorded in the UP24B! The built-in alarm settings can be set for high or low limits to trip other equipment.
THE ULTIMATE ELEVATION METER!
We've talked about air pressure, now let's talk about elevation! The incredibly precise 24 bit A/D converter in the UP24B looks at the air pressure and converts it to elevation above sea level. Once again, there I was standing in the engineering office watching the LCD graph. The text at the bottom of the screen said 472' 3". I said yea, so what? They said raise it up a few inches and watch. As I raised it the display constantly changed... 472', 8"; 473' 1" and so on. I couldn't believe it. The following day I took it to a tower site where I knew the ground elevation and it was dead-on... 1701', 6". Not only did I have the text display of the elevation but a chart graph of the elevation history!
The applications for the super accurate elevation meter are endless. From watching and recording elevations during hiking trips to measuring and recording the wave heights on boats! Let your imagination take over from there!
MARK MODE!
The special mark mode feature allows you to take readings when you want to. Simply supply a contact closure to the "MARK" input jack with the unit in Mark Mode and the current reading will be stored in internal FLASH memory. You can then download the data using the USB connector. Stored data is in comma delimited format for easy insertion into a spread sheet.
SPECIAL AIRCRAFT MODE!
What about aircraft? Needless to say, as a handheld device measuring air pressure, aircraft applications are limited to un-pressurized cabins. But the UP24B provides valuable flight assistance in such cabins and smaller aircraft. In fact, a special "Pilots Mode" is included in the menu to set a min/max altitude window setting to use in conjunction with the built in high and low alarms! The window is easily set up by programming in the desired high and low altitudes. If these limits are exceeded the UP24B will sound an alarm.
LOCAL OFFSETS & ALARMS...NO PROBLEM!
To accommodate site variances, offsets for pressure, elevation, and related hysteresis are also provided as a menu selected operation. Likewise, both high and low alarms can be enabled and set over a wide range of lows and highs for both pressure and elevation!
SMALL, LIGHTWEIGHT, THE SENSOR OF YOUR DREAMS!
While the UP24B is small enough to be kept in your coat pocket, it boasts a large 2.78" x 1.53" 128x64 pixel LCD display screen making viewing easy. Display modes include both realtime pressure and elevation graphs as well as pressure and elevation statistics. There are 12 user selectable sample rates from 1/10th of a second all the way up to every 15 minutes. The special MARK MODE is also available to allow data collection at your own rate.
What if you're in the field and want to save data captured in your UP24B? No problem there either! The built-in FLASH storage provides 13,824 samples of storage. That's equivalent to 3 hours and 50 minutes at the 1 second sample rate! Of course it's about 20 minutes at 1/10th of a second sample rate but that's probably faster than anybody, other than Wile E. Coyote, would need! When you get back you can transfer your data to your PC through a standard USB interface. A simple set of commands sent via your USB port can be used to set up many of the parameters of the UP24B directly from your computer using a terminal type interface or your own program. The data is comma delimited so it can easily be loaded into a spreadsheet.
Does all of this sound too good to be true? It comes close! And it all fits in a small handheld case that measures 5.5" x 3.6" x 1.5" and weighs about 4oz. with batteries. It runs on a single internal lithium ion battery and includes a built in charger/power management system. The UP24B can be operated on the internal battery, connected USB port on any PC or laptop, or external 6VDC to 30VDC power source. The power management system decides what source to use and also charges the internal battery from the connected source. Operating time on a full charge is over 2 days of continuous operation.
Want to run 24/7 even during power outages? Just connect either external source and turn on the UP24B. It will maintain the battery charge and operate the UP24B as long as necessary. If the power goes off the batteries will take over. Once the power is restored the battery will be recharged for the next time. If you're looking for the finest air pressure and elevation sensor, check out the UP24B, truly a marvel in the industry!
